The FRA location

The Frankfurt CargoHub stands out as a multimodal cargo facility in the heart of Europe.

The hub is located in a metro area that is one of the strongest economic performers. Three factors make the location a unique CargoHub: outstanding connectivity, a high level of capacity at the airport, and the region’s economic strength.

Outstanding connectivity

Air, rail, and road connections all work seamlessly together at Frankfurt Airport. Frankfurt’s central location in Europe means that it can be reached by truck from all of the continent’s major economic centers in just 18 hours. Globally, the hub ranks #1 worldwide for air connectivity: more than 120 cargo and passenger airlines connect Frankfurt with more than 320 destinations in 100 countries. Around 60 percent of the cargo handled is transported on cargo-only flights, while 40 percent is carried in the belly of   passenger aircraft.

A long-term vision: with its proximity to roads and railroad tracks, the area could also be potentially expanded into a trimodal hub with a CT (Combined Transport) terminal by an external project sponsor.

Robust capacity

Frankfurt Airport handles more cargo annually than any other European cargo hub. In the record year of 2021, this meant around 2.3 million metric tons of cargo were shipped via FRA. The ability of the CargoHub to handle such large amounts of cargo is also driven by the fact that all relevant companies from the global logistics industry are themselves located in Frankfurt. No other location in Europe has as many shipping companies. But Fraport AG is also working to develop the site further to allow for future growth. By working in partnership with the cargo community, Fraport AG provides a full-service portfolio for the rapid, secure, reliable, and flexible handling of all kinds of cargo at the Frankfurt CargoHub.

Economic Powerhouse

The Frankfurt Rhine-Main metropolitan region is one of Europe’s leading economic areas. The airport’s catchment area includes both densely-settled and industry-focused areas. While the city is particularly well-known for its finance industry, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, automobiles, and robotics are also key economic pillars. Major industrial companies have operations in the area that includes Frankfurt Airport. Frankfurt is home to more head offices for multinational companies than any other German city. It is also surrounded by a region known for its economic strength and purchasing power. The associated consumption can also be seen as an additional driver for imports.
