Enabling Cargo

Fraport Creating Value for the Local Region and Global Economy

Efficient and rapid delivery of goods via air cargo plays a major role in the success of German companies in the global marketplace. The local cargo community is also an economic driver for the Frankfurt Rhine-Main area and well beyond. As the operator of the Frankfurt CargoHub, Fraport AG is very much aware of the special significance of air cargo generally and of the role that location plays for it. The airport operator sees itself as an enabler of growth and innovation in the industry. Fraport is working together with the cargo community to face up to the market challenges proactively. In doing so, the company aims to further strengthen Frankfurt Airport as a key European air cargo hub. Fraport wants to take digitized, integrated, and sustainable handling of cargo to the next level.

“With the CargoHub masterplan, we’ve achieved a major milestone in our strategic development of the Frankfurt CargoHub. Our aim is to facilitate growth and development for the whole community.”

Max Philipp Conrady, Vice President Cargo Development

Air Cargo – Growth Industry and Key to Global Trade

At Frankfurt Airport, the future of cargo is being shaped with a clear focus on trends and developments. Air cargo makes access to global markets easier for German companies by reducing geographic limitations and time pressures in international trade. Air cargo is an essential backbone for global trade. In 2023, a total of almost 4.7 million metric tons of air cargo were handled at German commercial airports. For example, in trade with overseas markets, air cargo volumes have grown by an average of two percent per year over the past two decades. Air cargo is a growing market.

Frankfurt Airport is the leading cargo hub in the heart of Europe. Recent global challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, stretched supply chains, and geopolitical tensions have had a lasting impact on the industry.

Specific developments in the sector also harbor other challenges: e-commerce is booming, sustainable logistics solutions are becoming more important, and demand for special transport services - such as in the healthcare sector - is increasing.
